PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN
We are searching for an experienced PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN at our DHB NURSING ADMIN facility.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Job Summary:
Provides delegated clinical and technical care support under the supervision of a Registered Nurse to promote patient safety, comfort, mobility, personal hygiene and continuity of care to patients.
The Patient Care Technician performs only those tasks for which competency has been validated and within established hospital policies and regulatory standards.
All patient care activities are performed under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Registered Nurse retains responsibility for patient assessment, care planning, clinical judgment, and evaluation of outcomes. The Patient Care Technician reports observations promptly and follows assigned care instructions without independent clinical decision-making.
Essential Functions:
- Provides delegated patient care under RN supervision
- Recognizes significant observations in patient appearance and behavior
- Reports change promptly and accurately to the RN or appropriate staff
- Assist patients with personal hygiene according to their needs
- Answers call lights promptly
- Assists with admissions, discharges, and transfers
- Uses two approved patient identifiers prior to procedures and specimen collection
- Recognizes and responds to emergency situations
- Obtains drugs, x-ray reports, supplies, and equipment using proper forms
- Adheres to infection control and universal precautions
- Performs hand hygiene according to hospital policy
- Follows aseptic and sterile techniques when assisting procedures
- Uses appropriate PPE (gowns, gloves, masks, shields, etc.)
- Implements fall prevention and patient safety precautions
- Follows safe patient handling and mobility protocols
- Reports hazards, incidents, or near-misses immediately
- Maintains a safe, clean, and organized patient care environment
- Documents delegated care and observations according to hospital policy
- Maintains confidentiality and protects patient health information
Procedures and Techniques Performed Under RN Supervision:
- Temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure measurement
- Intake and output measurement and charting
- Collection of urine and stool specimens
- Application and care of restraints per physician order
- Postmortem care as directed
- Handling of supplies from sterile field
- Application of sterile dressings
- 12-lead ECG procedures and lead attachments
- Assistance with invasive procedures
- Measurement of abdominal girth, chest circumference, head circumference, and infant length in centimeters
Reporting and Documentation:
- Vital signs and changes
- Intake and output
- Observable/measurable changes in patient condition
- Patient flow sheets
- Status of completion of assignments
- Maintains control of supplies and equipment
- Performs routine unit maintenance (e.g., cleaning equipment, soiled/clean utility areas)
- Use comfort measures when caring for patients
- Adapts assignments to staffing or patient care changes
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum High school Diploma
- Completion of an approved Patient Care Technician course or enrollment in a nursing program
- Current BLS/CPR certification
- Knowledgeable and proficient in basic principles and functions of nursing and hygienic care for patients
- Competency in technical skills must be validated prior to independent performance
